Every Parent Needs to Read This

Sometimes, it takes just one moment to reveal the reality many of our young people are living every day.

After school, while waiting at a bus stop, one of our team overheard a group of secondary school pupils talking about an incident that had reportedly happened at their school.

As the conversation unfolded, one of the young people reached into their pocket and pulled out a pair of scissors.

Holding them up, they calmly explained what they would do if someone tried to attack them.

It wasn’t bravado.

It wasn’t about looking tough.

It was fear.

In that moment, it became painfully clear that some children no longer believe it’s enough to simply walk home. Instead, they feel they need to carry something to protect themselves.

No child should ever feel that way.

Many young people who carry knives or other weapons don’t see themselves as offenders.

They see themselves as potential victims.

They tell themselves it’s “just in case.”

They believe carrying something will keep them safe.

The reality is very different.

Carrying a weapon dramatically increases the risk of serious injury, arrest, criminal charges, or even losing their own life. In many cases, the very weapon they believed would protect them is used against them.

A split-second decision made out of fear can change lives forever.

Our team spoke calmly with the young people, acknowledging that their fears were real while helping them understand that carrying a weapon is never the answer.

More importantly, we reminded them that no child should feel they have to face these fears alone.

As parents and carers, we all have a role to play.

Don’t just ask:

“How was school today?”

Also ask:

  • Do you feel safe travelling to and from school?

  • Has anyone threatened or frightened you recently?

  • Are there places you avoid because you don’t feel safe?

  • Have you ever felt pressure to carry something to protect yourself?

  • Do you know you can always come to me without fear of being judged or getting into trouble?

These conversations could make all the difference.

Preventing knife crime isn’t just about policing.

It’s about listening.

It’s about building trust.

It’s about making sure every young person knows they have adults who will protect, support and stand beside them before fear leads them to make a life-changing decision.

By working together, parents, schools, youth organisations, police and local communities, we can challenge the belief that carrying a weapon offers protection and replace it with something far more powerful: hope, trust and opportunity.

We are committed to raising awareness of knife crime, supporting families and empowering young people to make safer choices.

No child should feel they need to carry a weapon to get home safely.

Every child deserves to walk to school without fear.

Every parent deserves the peace of mind that their child will come home safely.

Together, through honest conversations, education and strong communities, we can help make that a reality.
