It started like any other ordinary morning.<\/p>\n

A father left for work after saying goodbye to his family. Minutes later, he called home in a panic.<\/p>\n

“Lock the doors. Check on the children. Someone is lying in our front garden.”<\/p>\n

As emergency services were called, a mother rushed through the house, counting each of her children.<\/p>\n

One was missing.<\/p>\n

Desperately searching every room, she couldn’t find her teenage son. When she reached the front door, she looked to her husband for reassurance.<\/p>\n

Instead, he silently shook his head.<\/p>\n

In that heartbreaking moment, their world fell apart.<\/p>\n

The person lying outside wasn’t a stranger.<\/p>\n

It was their son.<\/p>\n

He had taken his own life.<\/p>\n

When investigators examined the family’s home security footage, they discovered something they hadn’t known.<\/p>\n

The night before his death, the teenager had spent hours alone in the family car, desperately scrolling through his mobile phone.<\/p>\n

His phone and school laptop were recovered, but shortly before he died, he had changed the passcode. The answers his family desperately needed were locked away.<\/p>\n

They knew he spent most of his time communicating through social media, so they waited as investigators worked to access his accounts and digital devices.<\/p>\n

Weeks became months.<\/p>\n

The silence was agonising.<\/p>\n

When investigators finally gained access, they uncovered a heartbreaking reality.<\/p>\n

Hidden on his devices were farewell messages for family and friends.<\/p>\n

They also discovered countless messages exchanged with someone using a fake online identity.<\/p>\n

Their son had become the victim of online sextortion.<\/p>\n

A criminal had manipulated him into sharing an intimate image, then threatened to send it to his family, friends and classmates unless he kept paying money.<\/p>\n

Terrified, ashamed and believing he had nowhere to turn, he continued sending payments in the hope the threats would stop.<\/p>\n

They never did.<\/p>\n

Among his final messages was one simple plea:<\/p>\n
